Once Mr. A’s best man was finished with his speech, it was time for the last and final speech from my Mom. I think we saved the best for last.
I was actually a little surprised that my Mom wanted to give a speech but not really surprised that she blew me out of the water (she’s a really eloquent, well thought speaker). When Mr. A and I were figuring out the reception scheduling, I mentioned that it would be a good idea to give both of our parents the invitation to speak (always better to offer and be denied than to assume). My Mom answered right away that she wanted to do a toast. She said that she knew my Father would never do it but she want to say what she knew he wanted to (does that not melt your heart?)
I’m glad we saved my Mom for last because I totally cried. I knew my Mom would find a way to get those tears rolling. Moms just do that. And I knew that whatever she said it would be thoughtful and heartwarming. I just had no idea I would be so touched by what she said. But I guess that is how it works when your Mom is your best friend.
Thank you, Mom, for putting so much time and effort into your speech. Mr. A and I were so humbled by what you said. It’s truly an honor to have you and Dad helping us through our life and our marriage.
“It’s such a pleasure to be here with so many people who know and love Mr. and Ms. Adams. They have both worked so hard on every detail, every aspect of their wedding ultimately to honor their family and friends. I think they have done a truly amazing job and I think all of us can feel their love.
Ms. Adams – you are the daughter that every parent hopes for, dreams of and aspires to raise (this is pretty much when I lost it).
Mr. Adams – you are the son-in-law every parent prays for their daughter to meet and fall in love with for the rest of her life. You have not only won our daughter’s heart you have won ours also.
It’s been a true joy to watch you both develop the loving, healthy and supportive relationship which you have now committed to in front of all who are important to you.
Steve and I would like to thank each of you for celebrating with us today and I would like to offer an Irish blessing as a toast – Because I’ll stick something Irish in anywhere (note that my brothers started hysterical laughing at this point, leave it to them to find a dirty joke in a sentimental moment.)

And now I’m crying all over again. Something about that line “may you see your children’s children” gets me every time.
