Top Five Engagement Picture Tips

I know this is my fourth engagement picture post but you know I couldn’t end this topic without giving you guys some tips and hints.  I am by no means an expert but from my experience here are my humble tips.

1) 1) Pick Outfits That Represent Your Style

Often times in the wedding blogland, brides feel pressured into styling themselves a certain way, especially when it comes to engagement shoots.  For the most part, the couple takes pictures in one “casual” outfit and one “fancy” outfit.  Casual usually equates to jeans and a t-shirt, while fancy is a dress and a suit.  This gives the couple a variety in terms of the appropriateness of the pictures and allows the photographer to take different shots.

Casual just isn’t really our style though.  I mean I’m the girl that wore dresses to class just for fun.  I didn’t even own a pair of sweatpants until I was 20 and that was only because my sorority gave us a free pair.  Needless to say, I wasn’t too thrilled with the idea of a jeans photo shoot.

So I decided that we should pick a version of casual that we felt comfortable with.  When I think of summer, casual, flowy, cotton dresses always come to mind.  And with that image in mind, I went shopping and happened upon that great plaid dress.  If I had been stuck in the jeans and t-shirt box, I never would have thought to pick such a fun vibrant dress.  So don’t been inhibited by the norms, think outside of the box and find something that suits you (pun intended icon wink Top Five Engagement Picture Tips ).

2)      Show Your Photogs Your Outfits

Once I had our outfits picked, I was really nervous that they wouldn’t work for our shoot.  In order to ease my fears (or calm my type A obsessive, compulsiveness), I sent our photographers pictures of our outfits a few weeks before our shoot. This saved us a lot of trouble in the long run.  Originally, we picked out khaki shorts to go with Mr. A’s casual outfit.  When Cicely emailed me back about our outfits, she mentioned that shorts might not be the best idea because we would be sitting in those outfits for the shoot.  Mr. A, however, did not have any khaki pants that were photo appropriate (aka his current pair of khaki pants had a hole in the crotch…attractive I know).  But since I sent these pictures to Cicely before our shoot, we had time to go buy new pants.  I can only imagine the panic that would have set in if we had this conversation the day of our shoot.  See being obsessive compulsive pays off sometimes.

3)      Get Gussied Up

I know, I know, I’m being shallow.  But honestly, just pay to get your hair and makeup done.  You will feel 100 times more confident and be a billion times less stressed out.  For me, there was never a question about whether I would get my hair and makeup professionally done.  I have persistent acne that especially enjoys make a surprise appearance on special occasions.  Our engagement shoot was no different.  I had a huge honker on my cheek.  I can’t imagine the stress I would have put myself through if I relied on my total lack of makeup skills to try to cover that baby up.  Thank goodness, I had Carla.  You can’t even tell that there’s anything wrong with my face.  So just splurge on the hair and makeup, if not for the practicality of covering up imperfections, do it for the confidence and serenity that comes with being pampered.

4)      Make The Mister Empty His Pockets

Not in the literal sense of making him broke (although I could use a new pair of boots…) but get all the junk out of his pockets and off of his waist before the pictures.  We had a previous incident where Mr. A ruined some nice family pictures by leaving his cell phone clip on his hip (yes, he’s an old man at heart…and no he’s not so important that he needs a cell phone clip).  I thought I was pretty clear about not repeating this mistake on our engagement shoot.  On the car ride to our first location, I reminded Mr. A to remove his cell phone clip and to take his keys and wallet out of his pocket…that of course wasn’t specific enough.  I forgot that boys carry around other things in their pockets….what things do you ask? Well take a look.

Yea, that’s a box of gum in his pocket.  Apparently, using the phrases “keys” and “wallet” weren’t enough. (Boys never cease to amaze me with how specific you have to be to get them to do something.)   I didn’t notice this the first time we looked at our pictures.  But when we got our DVD of the pictures, it was hard to miss on our 40 inch TV.  Mr. A can attest to the fact that I almost killed him right there.  To avoid a similar gum induced rage, make sure to do a second check of your fiancé’s pockets right before you begin your photo shoot.  The picture is funny now, but if he messes up our wedding pics with gum or other miscellaneous pocket items, I’m going to have to hurt him.

5)      Have Fun

Laughing like always

Luckily, it doesn’t take much to get us laughing.  Cicely would tell Mr. A to say something funny and he literally just had to mumble to get us laughing.  And our favorite pinkie shot that’s ever so popular on my blog was a happy accident.  We were trying to hold hands and it was just really awkward.  We made mention that we usually hold pinkies, not hands, and that’s when Cicely told us to go for it.  The best pictures come when the couple is just having fun and being themselves.

Hopefully, these cheesy and practical tips are helpful.  And if not, I hope I made you crack a smile at least once.  Thanks for letting me blog about these pictures so much.  I’m really proud of the way they turned out, not because we look like rockstars (in my humble opinion of course icon wink Top Five Engagement Picture Tips ) but because they are completely and totally us and there’s nothing better than that.

What are your tips for engagement pictures?

Engagement Pictures, The Grand Finale

After striking a pose at Waterfront Park, Mr. A and I walked across the street to a restaurant, Chadwicks, to change into our fancy outfits.  I was really excited for this part of the shoot.  Mr. A and I love, love, love to dress up.  Once we got our new kicks on, Mr. A and I followed Jason and Cicely to a, I kid you not, white picket fence.  I loved the symbolism.  Here Jason and Cicely set us up for their signature shot.  For this particular photo, Mr. A and I had to hold our poses for 10 minutes, while Cicely and Jason took hundreds of shots with different lighting.  In post production, Cicely overlaps the pictures to pick up the different shadows and lights and compiles them into one.  It didn’t sound that hard when Cicely first explained it, but arching your back for more than a few minutes is really painful, granted it was hot and humid that day so I’m not a total wuss.  I actually had to stop because I started getting dizzy.  I’m happy to say that the pain was totally worth it.

Since I was still a little dizzy, Jason and Cicely thought it would be a good time to sit down and take some solo shots.  I was very happy for the break.

With the solo shots out of the way, we moved to Old Town’s famous cobblestone streets.  We were really excited for this part.  When Mr. A and I first visited Old Town, we immediately fell in love with its charm and very specifically its cobblestone streets.  Mr. A and I asked Jason and Cicely to incorporate cobblestone streets into our engagement shoot and they did a great job.  It was pretty comical shooting on this street though.  Most cars don’t drive down it because it’s legit cobblestone and very bumpy.  This day was very different though.  Every time, we would set up a shot another car would come chugging down the street and we would have to move.  I swear I have never seen so many cars coming down that street.  Most of the drivers were good sports though and a bunch of them said “congratulations,” which I found hilarious.  I thought congrats were saved for actually getting married.

This last photo always cracks me up.  Cicely told Paul to come in for a kiss.  Being the jokester that he is, he decided to blow in my mouth.  The last photo is my reaction to the blowing.  Mr. A’s face is just priceless.  He’s so proud.

Once we finished with the cobblestones, we asked Jason and Cicely if  they would mind taking one more shot.  Mr. A and I have spent a lot of our time in Old Town, admiring the beautiful Christ Church.  It’s one of the oldest churches in Alexandria, surviving over 200 years, and it served the likes of George Washington and Robert E. Lee (which you know is a weakness for Mr. A and I).  We were so grateful that Jason and Cicely walked all the way across Old Town to get this shot for us.

And with these amazing shots, we ended the shoot and headed over to our favorite watering hole, O’ Connell’s.  I cannot say enough sweet, wonderful things about Jason and Cicely.  We loved having them around and the chemistry between us all was great.  Then, we got our DVD of the engagement pictures and my mouth dropped.  We got way more than I ever expected.  Seriously, if you are a DC, VA or MD bride call Procopio.  You won’t be disappointed.  And hurry up, their price has already increased $400 since we booked them in March.

How did your engagement pictures turn out?  Did you have good chemistry with your photographer?
