With our entrance out of the way, Mr. A and I launched immediately into our first dance.
We struggled a lot with a music selection for our first dance because what we consider to be our song is really too fast to slow dance to. In the end, I’m so glad that we decided to pick a different song because it ended up being something much more meaningful to us and really it’s become our new song. I’ll never forget the first time I played this song for Mr. A a single tear fell down his cheek. Right then, I knew it was a winner.
We ended up using “God Gave Me You” by Dave Barnes (shocker I know). This song (even though it’s currently being butchered by Blake Shelton) has really become an anthem for us. It was the song for our wedding video trailer and I can’t tell you how many people still tell us how much they liked it.
We also struggled a lot with how we would dance to our first dance. Originally, we wanted to do something formal and structured. We even went so far as to pay for a few dance lessons. But every time we left dance lessons, I still felt like it wasn’t the right move for us. The lyrics of the song are really deep and meaningful to us. If I spent the whole dance counting and making sure I was doing the right step there’s no way I ever would have been able to focus on the words. At the end of the day, all I really wanted to do was just sing a song to my baby. So that’s what we did. We middle school swayed and sang our hearts out. And I loved it.
What I remember about our first dance is looking into Mr. A’s eyes and singing the most beautiful words I’ve ever heard. I remember a grin that was plastered on my face. I remember an elation that simply can’t be repeated and a love that will never end.

“I’ve been a walking heartache
I’ve made a mess of me
I’ve made a mess of me

The person that I’ve been lately
Ain’t who I wanna be
Ain’t who I wanna be
But you stay here right beside me
Watch as the storm blows through
And I need you
God gave me you for the ups and downs
God gave me you for the days of doubt
God gave me you for the days of doubt
For when I think I’ve lost my way
There are no words here left to say, it’s true
God gave me you
There’s more here than what we’re seeing
A divine conspiracy
That you, an angel lovely
Could somehow fall for me
You’ll always be love’s great martyr
I’ll be the flattered fool
and I need you
God gave me you for the ups and downs
God gave me you for the days of doubt
For when I think I’ve lost my way
There are no words here left to say, it’s true
God gave me you
On my own I’m only
Half of what I could be
I can’t do without you
We are stitched together
And what love has tethered
I pray we never undo
God gave me you for the ups and downs
God gave me you for the days of doubt
God gave me you for the ups and downs
God gave me you for the days of doubt
For when I think I’ve lost my way
God gave me you for the days of doubt
For when I think I’ve lost my way
There are no words here left to say, it’s true
God gave me you, gave me you.
Gave me you.”
God gave me you, gave me you.
Gave me you.”
