Our Wedding Day: Place Card Table
Upon entering our reception site, our guests were greeted by our Place Card table.
We opted to do something less traditional because a table full of tented cards seemed too boring to me.
Inspired by this picture, Mr. A and I decided that we would use a frame to mount our place cards and table numbers, making it look more like a piece of artwork.
Originally, I thought I could use one of those empty frames from Michael’s and fill it with plexiglass. Unfortunately, the cost of that was entirely too prohibitive. Since we need an enormous frame, the cost of the frame alone would be close to $100.
After racking my brain, I turned to my favorite friend Craigslist to try to find a vintage looking frame that would be big enough. When I finally found a frame in our price range (I was trying to stay under $50), it ended up being very old school gold frame. To make it fit in better with our color scheme, we painted the frame metallic silver with craft paint purchased from Michael’s for less than $2.
Once the frame was completed, I found a seller on Etsy to create the custom shaped place cards and table numbers. We then sent those off to my favorite calligrapher so she could add in the names and table numbers.
Once we got everything back our calligrapher, I spent one morning organizing, lining up and gluing the cards with glue dots to our mirror.
Since the mirror was a piece of art on its own, we didn’t want to detract from it with a large floral display. We opted just to use some votives and flower petals to accent the frame in a simple and elegant way (didn’t hurt that it was a lot cheaper than a huge floral arrangement).
The funniest part about this project is that our guests got confused and they tried to take the cards off the frame. Eventually, they figured out that they shouldn’t be removed and some of them tried to put them back. Whoops.
Either way, I think it ended up being a beautiful display and an awesome keepsake. We plan on displaying the mirror in our apartment…that is if we ever remember to take it from my parent’s house (sorry Mom).
Did any of you use an innovative display method for your place card table?
We didn't bother with the place cards and just did a big seating chart.
K I love those big seating charts. It's so cool to see everyone thinking outside the box!
AHH!!! I just stalked a ton of your posts and I have to give you huge props on all the wonderful details of your wedding. STUNNING would be the word that comes to mind.
Loved the peonies and I 100% understand the love of history – my hubby and I were the same way – but for us it's ancient history.
PS – I saw that photo of you guys in Monaco – we also went there on our honey as a port of call on our cruise. Did you guys also do a cruise?
Thanks Modern Wife! Seriously so sweet of you to say. Definitely made my day. We did go on a Med cruise that started in Barcelona and went to Monaco France and Italy. I'll definitely do some posts about it after the wedding recaps are done. Thanks for stopping by!
lovely! what a good idea! I wish I could get married all over again to use some of the new ideas I'm seeing from people! how fun!
Thanks middleground. I tell my husband all the time that we'll have to get remarried at the 10 year mark
Beautiful blog.i want to do something similar with a framed seating chart.could u tell me where u got the two little holders that the large frame is sitting in? Thanks a mill!
They are from Michaels. They were originally black so we used rub and buff to make them silver. Let me know if you have any other questions.
